10/21 Automating Inequality: How High-Tech Tools Punish the Poor w/ Virginia Eubanks

October 21, 2019

Sam is en route to Las Vegas for the biannual Tort Law Conference. Michael Brooks hosts today’s Fun Half after an interview Sam recorded with Professor Virginia Eubanks on her book, Automating Inequality: How High-Tech Tools Profile, Police, and Punish the Poor. Join us as Sam and Eubanks discuss the impacts of data mining, policy algorithms, and predictive models on the working poor in America.

On today’s show: Jagmeet Singh final campaign video: “I Choose You.”

Virginia Eubanks (@PopTechWorks) joins Sam to discuss her new book, Automating Inequality: How High-Tech Tools Profile, Police, and Punish the Poor. Once upon a time, people without money were sent to “poor houses” where they were essentially incarcerated in exchange for basic services. Now this practice has returned in a high-tech way with the advent of sophisticated digital surveillance methods used to contain, investigate, discipline and punish the poor. Eubanks tracks this disturbing phenomenon through interviews with numerous experts and public benefit recipients.

On the fun half: AOC on how Congress members are pressured to abandon working class people. AOC on the “mass mobilization of working people” to win. Nina Turner on Bernie backing workers and his consistency. Sanders closing remarks, asks if people are willing to fight for the other who is not like them. Reporters share anecdotal stories/impact of AOC endorsing Sanders. Sam v. Tim Pool on utilitarianism and border detention centers. Mulvaney says Trump wanted Doral because he’s still in the hospitality business. Mike Pompeo’s non-answer on Mulvaney calling Ukraine deal quid pro quo. Protests in Santiago Chile. Updates on popular uprisings in Lebanon, Iran and Iraq. Rahm Emmanuel defends Warren’s wealth tax. Plus, your calls and IMs!
