David T. Courtwright, author of The Age of Addiction: How Bad Habits Became Big Business and presidential professor emeritus in the Department of History at the University of North Florida, joins us. Most people think of drugs and alcohol as the primary things associated with addiction. But people can become addicted to many other things. In this book, Courtwright explores the idea of “limbic capitalism,” by which corporations exploit the body’s limbic system for profit by getting people addicted to everything from sugary soft drinks to social media.
