Carlsen has been reporting from Tijuana, hearing stories from those seeking asylum who have been held in icebox, chain-linked holding pens while their claims are processed. Carlsen and Brooks discuss the on-going violence in the Northern Triangle, the home of most refugees at the southern border, and how US policies, both foreign and domestic have led up to this point where Central Americans have been left no choice but to leave their homes. Beyond the border crisis, how has Amlo, a left populist elected official, placated and resisted Trump’s policies that implicate Mexico? Carlsen points to the situation in Venezuela and Amlo’s decision to back a mediation process to illustrate how the president has resisted the Trump administration’s foreign intervention practices. Brooks and Carlsen conclude their discussion discussing the on-going drug war in Mexico and the US government’s role in growing violence across Mexico.
