It’s Casual Friday! Sam and Emma speak with Jeet Heer, writer at The Nation, to round up the week in news. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the US’ unilateral goals for the people of Palestine, the continued attacks on medical and refugee infrastructure in Gaza, the continuing backlash to the US’ role in this conflict, SAG-AFTRA board meetings, a victory for the Culinary Union in Vegas, and Mike Johnson’s not-so-continuing resolution, before parsing through the devastating (and still foggy) realities of the growing death toll in Gaza. Jeet Heer then joins, diving right into his assessment of the “guns and butter” agenda of the Biden Administration, and how it compares to the blueprints laid out by FDR and LBJ – for better or for worse. Next, Heer tackles the shotty footing of the Biden campaign one year out from election day, and how his backing of the ethnic cleansing of Gaza has weakened it further as various elements of his coalition – particularly among young, and Black and Brown Americans – begin to crumble. After parsing through the complete disconnect between the US political class and their voters, and the terrifying impact it could have, Jeet, Sam and Emma walk through the particularly out-of-touch doctrine of the GOP as Mike Johnson becomes perhaps the second most powerful theocrat in recent US history.
And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Shawn Fain reflect on the UAW’s incredible fight, Joe Manchin step back from reelection, and assess the biggest races heading into 2024. Michael Knowles theocrats all over himself, Dylan in Kentucky discusses the future of McConnell’s seat, Timmy from Nebraska asks about Iran, and Ross from NY vents his frustrations with US politicians.
