9/6 The Miracle of Cash Transfers; SAG Strike Update w/ Dr. Jiaying Zhou, Shaan Sharma

September 6, 2023

It’s Hump Day! Sam and Emma speak with Dr. Jiaying Zhao, Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of British Columbia, to discuss her recent research into the benefits of guaranteed cash transfers, and how they can help reduce homelessness. Then, they’re joined by actor Shaan Sharma, member of the SAG-AFTRA negotiating committee, to discuss the recent updates on the strike and the ongoing negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). First, they run through updates on Gabe Amo’s victory in Rhode Island, Saudi Arabia’s oil production cut, Trump’s Mar-a-Lago case, the Cop City RICO indictment, Russian bombing in Ukraine, COVID hospitalizations, captive audience meetings and AirBnbs in New York, and Google’s anti-monopoly trials, before parsing through Atlanta’s role as the testing ground for building massive Police day camps despite active local pushback – and how to criminalize those that won’t stop. Dr. Jiaying Zhao then outlines her study into the massive impact of direct cash transfers on the lives of homeless people and on the government’s pockets, with only $7,500 drastically reducing both the extent of time spent homeless and the net spending on aid. Then, Shaan Sharma updates us on SAG-AFTRA’s negotiations with Hollywood studios, why the studios refuse to negotiate in good faith for anyone but Wall Street and the shareholders, and the complete corruption of corporate America.

And in the Fun Half: Joe Rogan tells Oliver Anthony you can’t just tax the rich, Jeannine Pirro thinks hurricanes started in the 1400s, Elon Musk melts down about Jews ruining his business, and Saul roasts Sam for a second consecutive day and offers his opinions on Bugattis.
