It’s an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks to Andrew Seaton, junior research fellow at St. Anne’s College at the University of Oxford, to discuss his recent book Our NHS: A History of Britain’s Best Loved Institution. Then, Emma talks to Camille Rey, a mother of a trans child who left Texas and moved out of state due to Texas’s extremely restrictive anti-trans laws. First, Emma runs through the day’s headlines, touching on the severe air quality issues in the US, a terror attack on a gender studies class in Canada, Donald Trump’s alternative tactics to shirk responsibility for his stolen documents, and mass arrests in French protests against police brutality, before parsing through the Supreme Court’s affirmative action decision, their perversion of the 14th Amendment, and the highlights of the dissents. Andrew Seaton then joins as he dives right into the NHS’ 75-year history as a beloved British institution that always seems to be under threat from the right, first looking at the current state of the service – with the NHS deeply hindered during the pandemic alongside increasing cost-of-living and wage-crises among its laborers. Slowly working backward, Seaton then walks Emma through the Labor Party’s slow revitalization of the NHS over the 21st Century, revamping its budget after decades of cuts, and seeing a drastic improvement in its efficacy and efficiency, only for the emergency of a string of conservative governments in the later 2010s to completely reverse their progress. Continuing the journey backward, Emma and Andrew explore how the NHS remained the beast that Thatcher couldn’t slay during the neoliberal turn, before taking on the post-war labor project that was establishing the NHS, and how the project was viewed by the rest of the West (particularly the US). Camille Ray then discusses her experiences as the mother of a trans kid in Texas as anti-LGBTQ legislation gets more and more repressive, painting a picture of the impact of the mere existence of this legislation on trans kids, and the exclusionary and transphobic tactics that they employ. Wrapping up, Ray and Emma look at the reality of being a trans kid in the US, walking through what gender-affirming care ACTUALLY looks like, and what her and her son’s post-Texas life has provided.
