It’s Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Alex Pareene, Contributing Editor at the New Republic and proprietor of the AP newsletter on Substack, to round up the week in news. Then Sam and Emma are joined by comedian Lizz Winstead, co-host of the Feminist Buzzkills Live! podcast. First, Emma and Sam touch on Sam’s conversation with Destiny before diving into Gavin Newsome making an astonishingly good policy move, initiating the production of Insulin in California, taking a small step in undermining the dangers of IP in medicine. Then, Alex Pareene joins as they discuss how to get up in the morning, the importance of engaging in local organizing – not just in terms of its greater efficacy, but also with the importance of community support – and expand on Newsome’s insulin policy as a shocking departure from the lack of imagination in the Democratic Party. Next, Alex, Sam, and Emma look to Biden’s recent executive action on reproductive rights, and how it perfectly aligns with the Democratic Party’s inability to take actions that don’t tiptoe around the issues at hand, doing nothing to genuinely secure the right to reproductive healthcare, and instead focusing on how they can use this rollback of rights to secure votes, despite giving us no idea of why voting for them will help our rights. Diving deeper into liberal impotency, they discuss Biden and Democratic Leadership’s refusal to do anything but follow precedent as the right completely obliterates any precedent that comes in their way, with their commitment to the consultant class only giving rise to the term “ultra-maga” to fight back, all while still attempting to make bipartisan agreements with the “respectable” side of a fundamentalist party. They wrap up the interview by looking forward to the upcoming midterms, the impact Dobbs might have on it, and whether Democrats will finally remember that things other than federal elections matter. Then, Lizz Winstead joins as she dives into her work with the Abortion Access Front, centering both practical and medical support funds and the importance of engaging people in their own capacities to both keep them activated and address the countless areas of action that are needed. They also discuss the idea of the right’s cruelty being fundamental to their agenda, the flaccidity of Democrats’ arguments on “exemptions,” and the importance of uplifting the stories of actual people facing intense oppression and marginalization.
