5/25 Making Mutual Aid More Effective for the This Crisis & the Next One w/ Dean Spade

May 25, 2021

Sam and Emma host trans activist and law professor Dean Spade to discuss his book Mutual Aid: Building Solidarity During This Crisis (and the Next) on what we learned about collective action through the Covid-19 pandemic and how to better prepare for the next one. They explore what mutual aid is, why solidarity, not charity, is necessary to make up for the failures of the system, and how, beyond meeting material needs, mutual aid helps build connections and mobilize communities to work for and exercise self-determination, setting up long term systems of care for the future. Then, Spade chats about the challenges of anarchist organizing, the importance of understanding leaderships that produce mutuality and participation, rather than concentrated power in individuals, and what a successful post-transformative society would look like. They also delve into Sam’s comparison to union organizing and how mutual aid is deeply embedded throughout the histories of marginalized communities worldwide. Sam and Emma also chat infrastructure bill, and Fox returns to its roots and recenters the Black on Black crime narrative.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Nomiki swap radio horror stories, passivity is the norm on police reform, Rick Santorum says the left’s cancel culture is taking over the entire culture, Tucker Carlson adds another peg to the Replacement Theory board, Ron DeSantis passes a bill for Donald Trump to get back on Twitter, why Andrew Yang can fumble the bag and continue to grow his brand, how the crew plans to vote in the NYC Mayoral race, plus your IMs!
