7/20 Monopolized: Life in the Age of Corporate Power w/ David Dayen

July 20, 2020

Sam hosts David Dayen (@ddayen), Executive Editor at the American Prospect, to discuss his new book Monopolized: Life in the Age of Corporate Power, which details how a small collection of corporations have come to dominate every aspect of our lives.

On today’s show: Asked about “cancel culture,” NDAA and confederate named bases, Trump explains he won’t budge on base names.

David Dayen (@ddayen), Executive Editor at the American Prospect, joins Sam to discuss his new book Monopolized: Life in the Age of Corporate Power. From the airlines we fly on, to the internet companies we use, to the banks that control our money, much of American life is now dominated by a handful of large corporations. Dayen examines how things progressed to this point, and makes an argument for the resurrection of antitrust legislation as an effective way of dealing with corporate monopolies.

On the fun half: Trump says Biden/Sanders want to defund the police, Wallace in studio after interview says Biden wants to increase police funding. New Fox News poll: Trump says he’s not losing, polls are fake, says he’s winning in swing states, says Biden can’t put 2 sentences together. Ben Shapiro says Trump’s Covid policy has been good, media to blame for its focus on his rhetoric. Surgeon General on Fox & Friends imploring Americans to wear a mask, won’t call for a federal mandate. MS Governor struggles to defend lack of statewide mask mandate: ‘it’s complicated.’ Harpers letter drafter says signers voted against Glenn Greenwald signing the Harpers letter. Plus, your calls and IMs.
