June 8, 2020

Brooklyn College professor Alex Vitale (@avitale) joins Sam to discuss law enforcement reform, police abolition, and his book The End of Policing(Free ebook version available now from Verso books!)

On today’s show: Brian Kilmeade cannot believe we’re talking about defunding the cops. Ainsley fearmongers about crime rising if people can no longer call 911 in NYC.

Brooklyn College professor Alex Vitale (@avitale) joins Sam to discuss law enforcement reform, police abolition, and his book The End of PolicingThe history of policing as social control tied to capitalist exploitation. How the recent expansion of the police in the US was tied to austerity and the resulting social problems. Homelessness, youth gangs, mental health, and other issues the police should not be used to manage. Abolition as a political framework and how shrinking police budgets and reinvesting the funds fits into it. The Minneapolis PD as perfect disproving ground for Obama’s reform platform. Vitale’s take on the reform package proposed by House Democrats.

On the fun half:  Eliot Engel on AOC endorsing Jamal Bowman: she shouldn’t anoint whomever she wants. Video of Engel trying to speak at rally. Asked if he would defund the police, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey says no, faces brutal walk of shame. Bill Barr hedges against police reform, says DOJ only investigates police depts after states, says officials need to look at all evidence. Bill Barr relitigates what happened with peaceful protest in Lafayette Sq. on Monday. Buffalo PD applaud their colleagues leaving the courthouse after they’re charged with felony assault of 75 year old man. Larry Kudlow is getting people excited about the American comeback. Plus, your calls and IMs!
