4/23 How We Go from the Sanders Campaign to Democratic Socialism w/ Meagan Day & Micah Uetricht

April 23, 2020

Michael Brooks hosts Jacobin writer Meagan Day (@meaganmday) and Jacobin editor Micah Uetricht (@micahuetricht) to discuss their new book, Bigger Than Bernie: How We Go from the Sanders Campaign to Democratic Socialism

On today’s show: Trump says “we’re covered 100” to attack Iranian boats.

Jacobin writer Meagan Day (@meaganmday) and Jacobin editor Micah Uetricht (@micahuetricht) join Michael to discuss their new book, Bigger Than Bernie: How We Go from the Sanders Campaign to Democratic SocialismDespite failing to win the Democratic nomination, the Bernie Sanders campaign helped build a movement that must go beyond the electoral sphere and the career of any single politician if it’s going to succeed. Looking at the past, present, and potential future of leftist movements in the US, Day and Uetricht identify how labor organizing and “class struggle elections” can build working class power and continue the fight for democratic socialism.

On the fun half: Gordon Brown says we must address global inequality to stop Covid-19 spread. Anderson Cooper says Vegas is a virus petri dish, Las Vegas Mayor says he’s an alarmist and it’s up to casino owners to figure out how to social distance. Vegas mayor offers city residents as tribute to American economy: “we offer to be a control group.” Cuomo is upset about questions about protestors, says anyone upset with unemployment delays can get a job as an essential worker. Sarah Huckabee says AOC is putting people down and she might want to remember what it’s like to be a bartender. Pennsylvania workers leave PPE plant after a month straight of living and working in their factory.
