Sam speaks with Leigh Phillips and Michal Rozworski, authors of The People’s Republic of Wal-Mart: How the World’s Biggest Corporations Are Laying the Foundation for Socialism. As we move through late capitalism, major multi-national companies are held up as the ultimate expression of free-market capitalism, but Phillips and Rozworski argue that the Walmarts and Amazons are the best centrally planned economies in the world. Not only is planning on vast scales possible, we already have it and it works. The real question is whether planning can be democratic.
