4/24 At the Boundaries of Homeownership: Credit, Discrimination, & the American State w/ Chloe Thurston

April 24, 2019

Sam is joined by author Chloe Thurston to discuss her new book, ‘At the Boundaries of Homeownership: Credit, Discrimination, & the American State.’

While often touted as a sign of individualistic bootstrapping, middle class home ownership in the US is the result of a targeted set of government interventions going back to the 1930s. In this book, Thurston traces the history of government policy around home ownership, with special attention to who was excluded from accessing these kinds of resources (namely: women and African-Americans) and how these groups fought back against discrimination.
