Stephanie L. Mudge (@stephaniemudge), author of Leftism Reinvented: Western Parties from Socialism to Neoliberalism, joins us. In this book, Mudge examines the trajectory of left-leaning political parties in Germany, the UK, Sweden and the US. While the social democratic parties of Europe started out more socialist and labor-oriented than the Democratic Party in the US, their economic policies converged in the Keynesian era and into the neoliberal turn. Mudge focuses on the influence of experts on these policy decisions and argues that neoliberalism was a choice, not merely a response to economic forces beyond anyone’s control.
