It’s a Newsday Tuesday with Emma on the mic. She recaps the chilling spectacle that was the Bukele-Trump Oval Office meeting / press availability, including the Kafkaesque exchange over the wrongfully deported Maryland father Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia. As Emma explains, despite the Supreme Court’s ruling that the administration must make an effort to bring Abrego Garcia home, the Trump administration and and El Salvador’s crypto-strong man both claim to be unable to abide by the ruling out of deference to one another.
Emma then talks to Annelle Sheline, a research fellow in the Quincy Institute’s Middle East program who’s latest paper focuses on the U.S.’s prioritization of weapons sales over human rights. Annelle gets into some of the thinking of her state department colleagues over this issue, which she finds to be rooted in outdated American exceptionalism. The hypocrisy is particularly noteworthy when it comes to Israel, despite growing public sentiment against Israel’s destruction of Gaza and perpetual subjugation of the Palestinian people.
