It’s Casual Friday! Emma speaks with Jeet Heer, national affairs correspondent for The Nation, to round up the week in news. Emma runs through updates on the Harris/Walz CNN interview, Israel’s continuing war crimes, presidential debate protocol, swing state polling, mortgage rates, Trump’s absurd IVF pivot, RFK’s candidacy, Florida’s death penalty, and the death of Johnny Gaudreau. Jeet Heer then joins, as he and Emma parse through some high(and low)lights from Dana Bash’s interview of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, walking through her representation of her commitment to a progressive domestic agenda – including a better defense of ‘Bidenomics’ than the Biden team has ever offered – while still presenting herself as something “new,” and parsing through her steadfast rhetoric toward continuing support for Israel and their genocide. Expanding on this latter point, Heer unpacks Biden’s approach to the genocide in the wake of dropping out of the 2024 election, from his continued commitment to the Abraham Accords to some inklings of sandbagging a future withdrawal of support, before touching on the role Iran is playing in the region and the future of US Foreign Policy. Next, Jeet and Emma look at another VP trying to clean up their President’s mess, watching JD Vance perfectly show why he’s been called (by Jeet, in this very interview) “the worst VP pick since Aaron Burr” in his response to Trump’s recent comments criticizing Florida’s abortion ban.
