7/28 Trump Racking Up Indictments & DeSantis’s Deep Sleep w/ Heather Digby Parton

July 28, 2023

It’s Casual Friday! Sam hosts Heather Digby Parton, contributing writer at Salon.com and proprietor of the blog Hullabaloo, to round up the week in news. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Donald Trump keeping his criminal charge numbers up, Mitch McConnell’s future in the Senate, ramping heat waves across the US, environmental and fuel efficiency standards, and Elon’s continuing fraud, also watching Ron DeSantis attempt to defend his white supremacist curriculum. Digby then joins as she helps parse through Trump’s attempt to repurpose the “Crooked” and “crime family” monikers from Hillary to Biden, and touch on Ron DeSantis’ floundering campaign and why his attempt to out-flank Trump on the right was ridiculous. Digby, Sam, and Emma then attempt to assess what the hell his message is going into 2024, and what the greater GOP message is (and is it anti-Social Security?), before wrapping up with coverage of the ongoing strife between McCarthy and… the rest of the House.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss Jack Smith’s Hall of Fame pace with his Trump charges, explore the spiraling campaign of RFK, and tackle why the UFO story isn’t actually worth the coverage right now. Sandy from Ontario reflects on the recent terror attack at the University of Waterloo, Moody from Minneapolis dives into a recent public school data breach, and Vivek Ramaswamy shows off his hot bars. The MR team also watches Steve Deace’s recent meltdown, and a heartwarming story of organizing against fascists, plus, your calls and IMs!
