6/23 How The Sub Tells A Tale of An Era w/ Heather Digby Parton

June 23, 2023

It’s Casual Friday! Sam hosts Heather Digby Parton, contributing writer at Salon.com and proprietor of the blog Hullabaloo, to round up the week in news. First, Sam runs through updates on abortion legislation, the house GOP coming after Social Security and Medicare, the PFAS lawsuit, Biden sucking up to Modi, and Starbucks’ labor action over pride, before diving into Ron DeSantis’ commitment to anti-democratic actions, and watching AOC eviscerate his authoritarian tendencies on the House floor. Digby then joins as she and Sam dive right into this week’s massive story about the implosion of an “experimental” (aka unregulated) submersible, parsing through the industry experts’ (such as James Cameron) response to the Oceangate CEO’s rejection of safety procedures. They also dive into how this story is a perfect encapsulation of the anti-scientific and hyper-individualist libertarian strain that has run rampant over the last few decades, from climate denial to anti-vaxxers, looking also at the recent RFK vs. Peter Hotez, as another prime example. Wrapping up, Sam and Digby dissect parallels between the reactionary pushback to social change that birthed the lost cause movement, and our contemporary pushback to reproductive and gender-affirming care.

And in the Fun Half: Sam watches Charlie Kirk try to pin the submersible disaster on wokeism, Josh Hawley takes on the “religion” of woke, and Laura Ingraham denounces the anti-democratic criminalization of friendship between Justice Alito and Harlan Crow. Anthony from Austin gets nitpicky on fiduciary duties, Hannity attempts to calm the storm between Lauren Boebert and MTG, and Jannine Pirro reminds us that you can’t criticize capitalism under any circumstances. Cameron from Washington dives into fascist unreality, and RT from DC addresses MR’s perspective on Elon Musk. They also talk with Emma Vigeland as she reflects on her appearance on Tim Poo’s “Culture War” this morning, plus, your calls and IMs!
