1/13 The Rise of the Modern Senate and the Crippling of American Democracy w/ Adam Jentleson

January 13, 2021

Sam hosts Adam Jentleson (@AJentleson), former advisor to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, to discuss his new book Kill Switch: The Rise of the Modern Senate and the Crippling of American Democracy on how the filibuster negatively impacts American democracy.

On today’s show: Democratic House member says GOP reps are telling him they fear for their lives if they vote to impeach Trump.

How John C. Calhoun and other Southern Senators pioneered the filibuster to block civil rights legislation during Reconstruction. How it persisted through the Jim Crow era and became normalized. Reforms that could change the majority required to pass legislation in the Senate back to 50%.

Asked if he feels responsible for recent events, Home Depot CEO Ken Langone feels betrayed by last week’s riots: “I didn’t sign up for that!”

On the fun half: GOP House member says there’s violence on both sides of the aisle. Asked about companies opposing Trump, Lauren Boebert says Democrats were the ones who normalized violence. NJ Congresswoman asserts that GOP Reps were taking civilians on recon tours through the House the day before riots took place. Doocy asks hypothetical: If it was a GOP House would they impeach a Democratic president for what Trump did, Kilmeade admits yes, but Democrats always impeach, Kilmeade then asks pro-impeachment GOP why they’re against Trump now. Pompeo ignores questions from VOA reporter who was reassigned after challenging Pompeo w/ hard questions about his role in delegimitizing election results. Mike Pompeo says Al Qaeda’s Abu Mohammed al-Masri was assassinated in Tehran in August and that shows Al Qaida “home base” is in Iran. Plus, your calls and IMs!
