6/30 This Week’s SCOTUS Rulings & Why John Roberts is Not Your Friend w/ Elie Mystal

June 30, 2020

Sam hosts Elie Mystal, justice correspondent at the Nation magazine, to discuss this week’s SCOTUS rulings on abortion TRAP laws, executive authority over the CFPB, USAID funding, and the First Amendment, and religious schools receiving taxpayer dollars. Sam and Elie breakdown the recent rulings with the understanding that John Roberts is doing his best to dress up the court as an apolitical institution. Mystal says the goal of Roberts is to bend the law as much as possible to the GOP’s agenda. The two conclude their conversation assessing the possibility of court-packing under a Democratic White House and conservatives justices’ efforts to deescalate calls for court-packing.

And in the Fun Half: Rand Paul wants Fauci to be more optimistic about COVID response, Cuomo’s Mt. COVID metaphor, a disappointing result in Kentucky senate primary, Trump’s white power retweet and the Daily Wire clean-up, the barefoot gun-totters in St. Louis, Donald Trump misses the beautiful statues in the towns and villages, Sasha Baron Cohen pranks a conservative rally in Washington, plus your calls and IMs!
