Sam hosts Adam Goodman, assistant professor of history at the University of Illinois at Chicago, to discuss his new book, The Deportation Machine: America’s Long History of Expelling ImmigrantsAnti-immigrant politics have taken center stage in the age of Trump. In this book, Goodman tracks the history of anti-immigrant politics and deportations in the US, from the anti-Chinese laws of the 1920s, to the treatment of Mexican migrants as guest-workers to be exploited but never accepted, to the rise of exclusionary policies targeting Mexicans via a system of formal deportations, “voluntary” departures, and self-deportations. The goal: to blame “the other” for economic problems and exert discipline over migrant labor.
