6/17 State Capture: How Conservative Activists & Big Businesses Reshaped the America w/ Alex Hertel-Fernandez

June 17, 2019

Alex Hertel-Fernandez (@awh), Assistant Professor of Public Affairs at Columbia University and author of ‘State Capture: How Conservative Activists, Big Businesses, and Wealthy Donors Reshaped the American States — and the Nation,’ joins us.

On today’s show: Mick Mulvaney coughs through Trump’s financial statement answer.

Alex Hertel-Fernandez (@awh), Assistant Professor of Public Affairs at Columbia University, joins us to discuss his new book, ‘State Capture: How Conservative Activists, Big Businesses, and Wealthy Donors Reshaped the American States — and the Nation.’ How a “right-wing troika” of interest groups (Americans For Prosperity, the American Legislative Exchange Council, and the State Policy Network) work together to write and pass right-wing policy. How Scott Walker exemplifies this convergence. Why hasn’t the left been able to replicate these networks? The differences between how left and wing funders engage with the projects they fund. How the left could model some of its infrastructure on the right in an effort to build power in the long term.

On the fun half: Trump says he will unveil a new healthcare plan for 2020 election. Israel unveils ‘Trump Heights’ settlement. Mayor Pete says he will keep embassy in Jerusalem if he becomes president. Andrew Yang agrees with dave Rubin that UBI is means to destroy the welfare state. NYT reporter explains how she found the youngest child separated from parents by CBP; now two years old, he can’t yet walk or speak. Ben Shapiro says gay couples shouldn’t adopt because there’s a Mother’s and Father’s Day. Cops threaten to murder mother and child who took a Barbie doll from a store. Mitch McConnell explains why he will fill any 2020 Supreme Court vacancy. Pompeo says US will strike Iran if they need to protect international crude oil. GOP Senator Tom Cotton: “Unprovoked attacks” on oil tankers from Iran “warrant a retaliatory military strike.”
