4/30 How to Hide An Empire: A History of the Greater United States w/ Daniel Immerwahr

April 30, 2019

Daniel Immerwahr  (@dimmerwahr), an associate professor of history at Northwestern University, joins us to discuss his new book, How to Hide An Empire: A History of the Greater United States.

On today’s show: Ben Shapiro claims Ilhan Omar is just as anti-Semitic as white nationalists. Quebec mosque shooter was reading Shapiro and other right-wing figures’ tweets before the attack.

Daniel Immerwahr  (@dimmerwahr), an associate professor of history at Northwestern University, joins us to discuss his new book, How to Hide An Empire: A History of the Greater United States. 19 million US nationals live outside the US proper, but they don’t have the same rights as US citizens. Looking at the history of places like the Philippines, which saw an attack nearly as deadly as Pearl Harbor in WW2, the Guano Islands, which the US annexed for fertilizer, and Puerto Rico, where an American Dr. Mengele named Cornelius Rhoads ran rampant in the 1930s, Immerwahr reveals a story of colonial domination that is swept under the rug to this day.

On the fun half: Ro Khanna speaks against US involvement in the coup in Venezuela. Stephen Moore claims his writings against gender pay equity legislation from 2014 are not a problem. Joe Biden’s campaign slogan is “Make America Moral Again” but he doesn’t support Medicare-for-all. ALS sufferer Ady Barkan, speaking at m4a hearing, says healthcare must be a human right. Bernie compares his labor record with Biden’s after Biden claims to be “a union man.” Katie Porter explains Trump wants it both ways in investigations: he’ll claim executive privilege or private citizen privilege when it suits him. Chase shames poor customers for #MondayMotivation.
