“I don’t know where bin Laden is. I have no idea and really don’t care. It’s not that important. It’s not our priority.”
– G.W. Bush, 3/13/02
From IMer alexjs85: “Sam, despite knowing people lost in the attacks, I just feel a sense of unease at the recent bizarre events. It seems perverse to misplace death for justice. It seems perverse to celebrate the extra-judicial assassination of people the gov’t deems unsavory. It seems perverse, at least to me, to celebrate more death as closure for the death of many others, but that might be colored by my own sense of the injustice of the death penalty. I caught this tweet last night and it really spoke to me: two things that cost the US over a decade and $100b to do – get a man on the moon, and kill Osama bin Laden. Obama’s tone of accomplishment in last night’s speech at the death of a person, despite who that person is, along with that previous tweet, more truly to me about the trajectory of our society.
The people who celebrated in front of the WH last night, as Jeremy Scahill said on Democracy now today, are morons. I just hope that we can see this death as a reason to end our wars, as perhaps the death of Hitler was seen, but I doubt that will happen.
Justice does not mean eye-for-an-eye in our society anymore – we have a process and we can’t keep perpetuating a system of bigger-fish is allowed to kill littler-fish based on the implicit authority over morality placed upon the state, our state, over the authority of extra-state actors.”
