5/12 The Broken Heart of America w/ Walter Johnson

May 12, 2020

Sam hosts historian Walter Johnson to discuss his new book The Broken Heart of America: St. Louis and the Violent History of the United States and how the pandemic has disproportionately impacted black Americans. Johnson describes the history of St. Louis and his theory of western anti-black racism, one of expulsion and white nationalism, rather than southern racism, which depended on slave labor. Sam and Johnson also explore how real estate development and municipal ordinances helped formalize St. Louis’s institutional racism. Sam and Johnson conclude their conversation assessing covid19’s disproportionate impact on black America and the Ahmaud Arbery lynching.

And in the Fun Half: the real Obamagate, Trump’s “Mission Accomplished” moment, Trump tells an Asian American reporter to direct her question to China, Stuart Varney says direct cash payments are equivalent to buying votes, today’s special elections, Dave Rubin ties himself in a logic knot, the Biden voting rationale, plus your calls and IMs!
